Crosstick Alley

Crosstick Alley

Crosstick Alley is a laneway located in Dublin’s Liberty of St. Thomas, connected Francis Street to Meath Street.

Association with Poddle

There seems to be no connection. The article in 1971 suggests that the name of the lane may have been based on a crossing of the Poddle but the Poddle never crossed near this.

What the Newspapers Say

  • Crosstick Alley, located in Dublin’s Liberty of St. Thomas, connected Francis Street to Meath Street. This area, outside Old Dublin’s walls, may have derived its name from a forgotten shrine or crossing place on the ancient Poddle river, though historical maps, including those by Father M.V. Ronan, don’t support this theory. In 1854, notable residents included the Hannigans, McGuirk, Sharkey, and Clarke families.
