River Poddle & Tymon - points of interest

The River Poddle begins its journey as the underground Tymon River near Fettercairn House in Tallaght, becoming the Poddle proper near Glendown Estate, Templeogue, before flowing into the Liffey at Wellington Quay. The landmarks below highlight locations along the Poddle's original course, where we have uncovered newspaper articles and historical documents.

City Watercourse - points of interest

The City Watercourse constructed in the 13th Century is a man made waterway which connected the Dodder at the Balrothery Weir to the Poddle near the Glendown estate. The "Stone Boat" at Kimmage split the combined City Watercourse and Poddle flow sending one third of the water to Thomas Steet via Dolphins Barn and then rejoins the original Poddle course near St Patrick's Cathedral. The points of interest below mark interesting spots that formed part of this manmade structure.

The Abbey Stream is a stream that forks from the main Poddle course at Mount Jerome Cemetery, through Greenmount, Donore Avenue, Back of the Pipes, Marrowbone Lane, through Pimlico to Mill Street where it meets back with the main Poddle course.

Tenter Water - points of interest

The Tenter Water flows from the junction of Clogher Road and Rutland Avenue to Blackpitts via the Tenters area.

Several news articles mention the Poddle in locations where there is little evidence the river actually flowed. These points are marked in grey on the map, and we hope to uncover a connection to the river in the future.
